Who were the Most Popular Authors in 2001?

These were the 100 most popular authors, based on circulation figures, in 2001. The headliners are still childrens picture book authors, and mystery and other popular fiction authors. Barbara Kingsolver continues to to rise up the list; the other (highest circulating) 'literary' authors to appear in the top 100 are Larry McMurtry, Amy Tan, John Steinbeck, Isabel Allende, and--oh yes-- Shakespeare. No non-fiction authors show up in the top 100 : Deepak Chopra at 107 is a near miss. There were 37,066 authors in the library's collection whose books circulated in 2001; the 100 authors below, by themselves, produced 13% of all circulation. It might be worth pointing out that because of the closing of the Main Library for repairs, our reading patterns may not be entirely normal.
