Who were the Most Popular Authors in 2002?

These were the 100 most popular authors, based on circulation figures, in 2002. The headliners are still childrens picture book authors, and mystery and other popular fiction authors. 'Literary' authors to appear in the top 100 are Barbara Kingsolver, Larry McMurtry, Anita Shreve, Ann Tyler, John Steinbeck, Isabel Allende, and Mark Twain; in the second 100, Shakespeare, Amy Tan, Ernest Hemingway, Toni Morrison, Ian McEwan, Jane Austen, John Irving.) Deepak Chopra is the only non-fiction author in the top 100. Unquestionably, we are fiction readers, and we read a LOT. (Non-fiction authors in the second hundred: Thich Nhat Hanh, Dalai Lama, Steven Ambrose.)

There are about 35,000 authors whose books circulated in 2002; the 100 authors below, by themselves, produced 14% of all circulation.
