Who were the Most Popular Authors in 2003?

These were the 100 most popular authors, based on circulation figures, in 2003. The headliners are still childrens picture book authors, and mystery and other popular fiction authors. 'Literary' authors to appear in the top 100 are Barbara Kingsolver, John Steinbeck, Larry McMurtry, Isabel Allende, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, Jack London, Jane Smiley and Jane Austen (almost, she's #102); in the second 100, Joyce Carol Oates, Ian McEwan, Toni Morrison, Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, Alice Hoffman, Graham Greene, Margaret Atwood, Charles Dickens, and Annie Proulx.) Deepak Chopra again is the only non-fiction author in the top 100. Unquestionably, we are fiction readers, and we read a LOT. (Non-fiction authors in the second hundred: Dalai Lama, & Thich Nhat Hanh.)

There are about 35,000 authors whose books circulated in 2003; the 100 authors below, by themselves, produced 14% of all circulation. Another way of looking at it: everybody from #72, Robert Crais, upwards was checked out of our library system at least once a day... and Hillerman at the top of the list was checked out four times a day. Every day. All year long.
