Who were the Most Popular Authors in 2004?

These were the 100 most popular authors, based on circulation figures, in 2004. The headliners are still childrens picture book authors, and mystery and other popular fiction authors.
There are about 37,000 authors whose books circulated in 2004; the 100 authors below, by themselves, produced 12% of all circulation. Another way of looking at it: everybody from #71, Eve Bunting, upwards was checked out of our library system at least once a day... and Nora Roberts at the top of the list was checked out four times a day. Every day. All year long.
      Most popular authors for: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, & 2006; and Most Popular Non-Fiction Titles 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2006; and,

More about this list:
'Literary' authors who appear in the top 100 are Barbara Kingsolver, John Steinbeck, Larry McMurtry, Joyce Carol Oates, Anne Tyler, Isabel Allende, Mark Twain, and Ernest Hemingway; in the second 100, Margaret Atwood, Jane Austen, Toni Morrison, Jane Smiley, Gabriel García Márquez, Tracy Chevalier, Charles Dickens, C. S. Lewis, Rudolfo Anaya, William Shakespeare, and Louise Erdrich.) There is no nonfiction author in the top 100 this year. Unquestionably, we are fiction readers, and we read a LOT. (Non-fiction authors in the second hundred this year: Deepak Chopra, Thich Nhat Hanh, and David Sedaris.)
'Most popular' is a moving target. Nora Roberts has been moving up the list year by year and is now our most circulated author. Dan Brown zoomed up out of nowhere in 2003/2004. Agatha Christie and Louis L'Amour are drifting down in popularity. And so on. On the other hand, nine of the top twenty authors from 1998 are still in the top twenty in 2004. And the Berenstain Bears and Dr. Seuss are perennial.
