Who were the Most Popular Authors in 2005?

These were the 100 most popular authors, based on circulation figures, in 2005. The headliners are mystery and other popular fiction authors, and children's picture books.
There are about 37,000 authors whose books circulated in 2005; the 100 authors below, by themselves, produced 12% of all circulation. Another way of looking at it: everybody from #74, Peggy Parish, upwards was checked out of our library system at least once a day... and Nora Roberts at the top of the list was checked out four times a day. Every day. All year long.
      Most popular authors for: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, & 2006; and Most Popular Non-Fiction Titles 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004; and,

More about this list:
'Literary' authors who appear in the top 100 are Rudolfo Anaya, John Steinbeck, Larry McMurtry, Jane Austen, Ian McEwan, Isabel Allende, Mark Twain, William Shakespeare and Ernest Hemingway; in the second 100, Barbara Kingsolver, Louise Erdrich, Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Atwood, Charles Dickens, Anne Tyler, Gabriel García Márquez, and Willa Cather.) Non-fiction authors in the top hundred this year (and most years): Deepak Chopra and Thich Nhat Hanh.
'Most popular' is a moving target. In general it means an author with lots of titles, which usually means we have lots of copies. If we have audio versions of an author's books, that also piles up the numbers, because audio circulates like wild. There are noticable changes. Alexander McCall Smith popped up into the top three because he had a lot of new titles all at once. In general brand new titles create a demand for an author's backlist. Newer authors--think Lemony Snicket, J. K. Rowling, Dan Brown--come along, build a following, and move up the list. Old favorites--for example, Dick Francis-- slip down in popularity. Barbara Kingsolver most recent title was a book of essays published in 2002. Though still popular among Santa Fe readers, she's drifted down into the second hundred; if she publishes a new novel this year, people will read that one and lots of her earlier titles, and the numbers will pile up again.
