Who were the Most Popular Authors Last Year?

These were the 100 most popular authors, based on circulation figures, in 2006. The headliners are popular fiction authors, and children's series books.
Our total circulation numbers are down this year, because the Bookstop closed in May. And the numbers will presumably skyrocket when the Southside Library opens later this spring. But the proportions remain quite consistent. There are about 37,000 authors whose books circulated in 2006. The 100 authors below, by themselves, produced 12% of all circulation. Another way of looking at it: everybody from #60 —Hank the Cowdog's creator John R. Erickson— upwards was checked out of our library system at least once a day... and Nora Roberts at the top of the list was checked out four times a day. Every day. All year long.
      Most popular authors for: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2005; and Most Popular Non-Fiction Titles 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006; and,

More about this list:
'Literary' authors who appear in the top 100 are Larry McMurtry, Jane Austen, C. S. Lewis, Anne Tyler, Isabel Allende, John Steinbeck, Rudolfo Anaya, Charles Dickens, and Mark Twain. Rudolfo Anaya, John Steinbeck, and Amy Tan. And in the second 100, Ian McEwan, Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Atwood, Ernest Hemingway, Philip Roth, T. Coraghessen Boyle, Louise Erdrich, William Shakespeare, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jack London, John Updike, Barbara Kingsolver, Salman Rushdie, and quite a few more. The only non-fiction author in the top hundred this year is Deepak Chopra. In the second hundred, Thich Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama...
'Most popular' is a moving target. In general it means an author with lots of titles, which usually means we have lots of copies. If we have audio versions of an author's books, that also piles up the numbers, because audio circulates like wild. In general, brand new titles create a demand for an author's backlist. Newer authors--think Lemony Snicket, J. K. Rowling, Alexander McCall-Smith, Dan Brown --come along, build a following, and move up the list. Old favorites--for example, Dick Francis-- slip down in popularity. Barbara Kingsolver is still popular among Santa Fe readers, but she hasn't published a novel in a long time. She's drifted down into the second hundred; when she publishes a new novel, or if her non-fiction title scheduled for this year is a hit, people will read that one and lots of her earlier titles, and the numbers will pile up again.
