The Southwest Reading Room at the Main Library was designed in 1936 by John Gaw Meem to serve as the City Council Chamber in what was then City Hall. In this room we keep our materials about New Mexico. In the glass cases are reference copies which can be used only in the library. On the open shelves at the back of the room there are circulating copies of many of the same books. That's the Storyteller Horse in the background... [photo: view of the

The Southwest Collection

The library has both circulating and reference items in the Southwest Room. We try to keep one copy of each New Mexico title for library use only, so that that any title is always available for research.
