I came to Santa Fe in 2018. In 2021 I retired after practicing heart surgery for 35 years, and wanting to contribute to this community, applied for a position with the Santa Fe Public Library Advisory Board. I grew up in a rough steel mill town in West Virginia, a place with no movie theaters or bookstores, but it had a good public library. From the age of six I took the bus to the library almost every Saturday, borrowing my three-book limit and knowing I had to read them all and return them by the next Saturday or risk having a week with nothing to read. I can say that I literally read my way out of my environment, and I am grateful for the life that library has given me. I hope to contribute in some small way to assure that such opportunities continue to exist for others. Favorite book? That’s a tough one. Certainly the book I’ve read the most is Catch-22. I always get choked up at the end of it, feeling the indomitability of the human spirit and hope for all humanity.
