Event Details

Join Medical Anthropologist Phoenix Savage in an exploration of the origins of Hoodoo and its prominent role in the 2025 film Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler. The talk will provide an overview of how Hoodoo is portrayed in the film, its historical development, and how it came to be practiced in this region of the country. The presentation will also touch on the Black and Asian communities of the Mississippi Delta, which are also featured in the film. A robust Q&A session will follow.

Presenter Biography

Picture of Phoenix Savage

Phoenix Savage is a retired Associate Professor of Art who relocated to Santa Fe four years ago, where she continues her sculptural studio practice. For the past three years, she has served as Director of the Yoga in Prison Project at Springer Correctional Facility in Springer, New Mexico. Currently, she is the Project Manager for Peace Within, Peace Between, a City of Santa Fe initiative in partnership with the Santa Fe Community Yoga Center. This program engages city youth in yoga, meditation, and mindfulness to cultivate conflict resolution skills.

A Medical Anthropologist and Fulbright Scholar, Savage’s research focuses on complementary and alternative healing modalities rooted in African cultural traditions among Southern African American communities. Her work specifically explores Hoodoo as a culturally grounded help-seeking practice among Black populations in the Mississippi Delta.
