Out from the Shadow of Giants: The Life and Times of Thomas Oliver Boggs
Presentation by researcher Priscilla Gutierrez
Thomas Oliver Boggs, the son of Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs, was a trader for Bent St. Vrain & Company before embarking on his own commercial endeavors in Santa Fe. Founder of Boggsville, CO as well as a founding pioneer of Clayton, NM, Boggs was a close confidante of Kit Carson. After Carson's death, he was entrusted with raising his orphaned children. Although a major player in Southwest history, Boggs' story remains obscured by the shadow of the giants of the Santa Fe Trail.
End-Of-The-Trail Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association meetings and/or field trips are held usually the second Saturday of the month from September to May. A variety of educational programs are offered focusing on people, places and events that occurred along the western portion of the Trail. The chapter has over 75 members, and we invite anyone interested to join us in the enjoyment and protection of this wonderful historic legacy so vital to the history of New Mexico!
