Read an author of your choosing from a predetermined country. July's nation is Ireland. We will meet each third Thursday of the month to discuss your author, their works, and any themes they explore.
To get you started, check out our list of a few literary award-winning authors. Due to the robust history of Irish writers, this suggested list focuses on contemporary best-selling writers. Patrons can read whomever they like.
Suggested authors:
John Banville, author of The Blue Guitar, Mrs. Osmond, and The Sea
Kevin Barry, author of Beatlebone, City of Bohane, Dark Lies the Island, The Heart in Winter, and Night Boat to Tangier
Sebastian Barry, author of Days Without End and Old God’s Time
Maeve Binchy, author of 30+ available titles from SFPL
The late novelist and playwright’s works were characterized by a sympathetic and often humorous portrayal of small-town life in Ireland, and surprise endings. A good novel for first-time Binchy readers would be A Week In Winter.
Disha Bose, author of Dirty Laundry and I Will Blossom Anyway
Naoise Dolan, author of Exciting Times
Roddy Doyle, author of The Commitments, The Guts, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, Smile, The Woman Behind the Door, and The Woman Who Walked into Doors
